Ryan has been a qualified horticulturist and landscaper since 1998. Having practiced in many countries throughout the world, beginning in his native South Africa, he became interested in more sustainable approaches to working with the environment. Ryan discovered Permaculture in 2008 and shortly afterwards began work on the La Loma Viva Permaculture project, of which he is co-founder and manager with his partner Karen.
Ryan is passionate about Permaculture, people, plants, water, soils, collaboration and socio-ecological processes. His current focus is on developing the farm and learning about mindfulness in order to be in service to the greater good. As a life-learner, he strives to gain experience in many aspects of Permaculture and land management, whilst learning how to provide his own food and other resources and demonstrating a different model of farming, which really functions here at La Loma. Through his own experience he strives to educate others who would like to learn how to design systems that work in harmony with nature.
Ryan completed his PDC with Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton in Istanbul in 2010. He is currently involved in all aspects of running and developing the La Loma Viva farm according to Permaculture principles and ethics. He also completed an Earthworks course with Geoff Lawton in Morocco in July 2012 and is passionate about implementing all sorts of beneficial earthworks on the land here. Ryan wants to develop his knowledge and skills to teach courses at La Loma. He looks forward to meeting and exchanging ideas with all the people who will visit the farm.
